[PATREON UNLOCK] Update Patch - May 2025

Update Patch News Roundup (27/04/25)

Welcome back to the Update Patch, where we summarise the biggest news stories from the last week. It's been a big week in gaming, so without any further ado, let's get started.

GTA VI Delayed

In a move that's not all that surprising to those who've been keeping track of Rockstar's development history, GTA VI has been delayed until May 26th, 2026. The game was originally set to release this autumn.

In a post on its website, Rockstar stated, "With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve."

Rockstar's last major title, Red Dead Redemption 2, was also delayed multiple times prior to launch. RDR2 originally had a release date of autumn 2017, which was pushed back to spring 2018 before releasing worldwide on October 26th, 2018.

Giant Bomb and Polygon Suffer Huge Staff Departures On The Same Day

Two long-standing stalwarts of games media have effectively been dismantled. Giant Bomb and Polygon both saw staff departures this week, on the same day. Giant Bomb's Dan Ryckert and Jeff Grubb have both parted ways with the site after the owners, Fandom, allegedly foisted 'brand safety' guidelines onto the crew, which itself came just days after Giant Bomb announced that it was 'pausing on streams for a bit' on Bluesky. In a statement released on the Giant Bomb Bluesky account, an unknown spokesperson said, following the departures, "we're actively exploring creative directions for the future of GB and look forward to sharing more with you soon".

The fate of other Giant Bomb staffers is currently unknown.

Meanwhile, Polygon, another long-running site and producer of many industry luminaries, was acquired by Valnet. The site immediately saw layoffs of ”at least” 25 people, according to Aftermath, with many of these being union members. It's safe to say that Valnet does not have a strong reputation, as an investigation by TheWrap alleges poor conditions. Valnet denies this and is suing TheWrap for $64.5 million.

The loss of both of these sites is a huge blow to the games media industry. Both Giant Bomb and Polygon have played host to countless industry legends, including; Jeff Gerstmann, Austin Walker, Abby Russell, Brian David Gilbert, and many more. What awaits these sites in the future is far from clear, but they will have an exceptionally hard time recreating what they both once were.

Xbox Price Increases

Following on from Sony increasing the price of the PS5 last month, Microsoft has now acted in kind. The Xbox Series X and S consoles have both had their prices raised. In the US, the Xbox Series S 512GB is going from $299.99 to $379.99, and the Series X is going from $499.99 to $599.99. In the UK and Europe, an Xbox Series X will now cost £499.99 and €599.99, respectively.

It's not only consoles that are going up. Some accessories and games are also increasing in price. New Elite controllers are getting a price increase of $20 in the US, going up to $199.99 each, while the Core Elite controllers are going up by $10, to $149.99.

Some first-party games are going to increase in price by "this holiday season", according to Microsoft's statement. New first-party games will be priced at $79.99. With Sony's price increases and Nintendo's Switch 2 pricing, it's an expensive time to be a gamer. We're a long way from those golden years when consoles were released and consistently had price cuts throughout the generation.

You can read the full statement and see a breakdown of the price increases on this webpage.

Hollow Knight: Silksong Teases Playability

Hollow Knight: Silksong, the long-awaited sequel to 2017's favourite bug-em-up, is going to be playable in September! But only at an Australian museum, so if you're not Antipodean, you're probably out of luck. The game will be at Melbourne's ACMI, a museum dedicated to screen culture, as part of a larger exhibition called Game Worlds, which will run from September 18th to February 8th next year.

The wider release date for Silksong remains hazy, but the developers, Team Cherry, has said the game will be out this year. It's possible that the game will actually be out before the museum exhibit opens, or at least, not soon after, but we shall have to wait and see. Since Silksong popped up as part of the Switch 2 Nintendo Direct, fans have not had much to go on.

Speedrunner Beats Breath Of The Wild On Switch 2 At Demo Event, Yes, Really

In what can only be seen as a sign of some gamers' dedication to their art, a Japanese speedrunner has somehow already managed to beat Breath of the Wild on the Switch 2, despite the console not being out yet. The speedrunner, Ikaboze, attended a Switch 2 demo event in Tokyo, and with just 20 minutes of allotted playtime and a save file outside Hyrule Castle, managed to beat Ganon with no late-game equipment.

Ikaboze didn't even need 10 minutes. You can watch this absolutely wild feat of speedrunning in this video.

EA Pauses Development Of Rally Games, Downs At Codemasters

EA has confirmed that it is 'pausing development plans on future rally titles" following the end of its partnership with the World Rally Championship (WRC). This follows a move from EA last year that saw it announce that it was  "moving away from development of future licensed IP".

Unfortunately, this doesn't only mean that off-road racing enthusiasts will have to find a new home, but it has also been partnered with news of layoffs at Codemasters. In a statement to VGC, a Codemasters spokesperson said that the studio is "reducing some roles" and that it will redeploy as many staff as possible across other areas of EA Sports.

Borderlands 4's Release Date Moves Forward

Borderlands 4 is set to come out earlier than planned, with a release date set for 12th September, instead of 23rd September. In a since-deleted video, Randy Pitchford of Gearbox said that this was down to development going smoothly. While some linked it to wanting to avoid competing with GTA VI, Pitchford denied this on social media, and the delay of GTA VI seems to put paid to any such rumours.

This announcement about the release date has come during the same week that we got a new gameplay trailer for Borderlands 4, which you can watch below.

Update Patch News Roundup (11/05/25)

Hello and welcome back to Startmenu's Update Patch, our summary of the hottest gaming news from the last week. In this week's edition, we've got trailers, Star Wars, Half-Life 3, oh my! Without any further delays, let's get right into it.

New GTA VI Trailer Breaks A Record And Wows Audiences

There's a brand new GTA VI trailer out, and it's a real doozy. It shows us a little bit of what the story is going to look like, with Jason, one of the game's protagonists, picking up Lucia Caminos, the game's other protagonist, from prison. We see countless characters, some really nice fluid dynamics inside beer bottles, and, of course, some crime, most notably a heist of some description and what appears to be an underground fight club.

Some viewers have picked up on potential voice talent that's made an appearance in the game, including a voice resembling that of Stephen Root, of Barry and King of the Hill fame.

The trailer spread a huge amount of hype, as you can probably imagine, racking up 475 million views across all platforms in its first 24 hours, according to The Hollywood Reporter, with Rockstar claiming it as the biggest video launch of all time.

You can watch the trailer here, if you've not already seen it:

Destiny 2 Set to Get a Star Wars-themed Expansion

Destiny 2, everyone's favourite Orb-pondering FPS, is going to get a Star Wars-themed expansion later this year. However, it's not going to be coming for a while yet – with Destiny's long-running Light and Darkness Saga having come to an end, we're going to get another expansion first. This first DLC, called The Edge of Fate, will commence Destiny's next saga, The Fate Saga, and is due to release on July 15th.

The Star Wars-themed expansion, Renegades, is set to follow on December 2nd. It's going to be interesting to see how they mesh these two universes, with Bungie stating that the expansion will have a "narrative integral to the Fate Saga, while also suffused with inspiration from and homage to Star Wars".

The teaser trailer doesn't show too much beyond a blaster and a lightsaber, but sure. I'm down for this dumb stuff, the sci-fi equivalent of adding celebrities to Call of Duty.

Half-Life 3 Is Already Playable, Claims Leaker

The development of Half-Life 3 has become a bit of a meme at this point, akin to that which preceded Duke Nukem Forever. Where it was once expected to be Half-Life 2: Episode 3, the latest word on the street is that HL3 will be a full-sized instalment, but we don't know much else about it. However, if one leaker is correct, that may all soon change. Full-time Vavle news YouTuber, Tyler McVicker, said that HLX, the codename for the next instalment in the franchise, is now 'playable end-to-end', as reported by Engadget.

McVicker also said that the game could be announced as soon as this Summer, with a potential release this Winter. Valve is known for keeping things under its hat, so we likely won't get any definitive confirmation for a while yet.

Quake Finally Added To The World Video Game Hall Of Fame

Quake, one of the most important FPS games in existence, and no, I'm not biased at all, has finally been added to the World Video Game Hall of Fame. Quake's predecessor in FPS-domination, Doom, was added back in 2015, but Quake is equally important in the history of FPS games and 3D lighting in particular. Not only was the game groundbreaking for its use of the mouse (gasp! Not just playing with your keyboard!) It also offered sensational multiplayer at just the right time, as the game's Hall of Fame entry notes.

"Quake’s multiplayer portion of the game proved to be massively popular with early online users. By 1996, many college campuses were hooked up to the internet, and dial-up was becoming more widespread in homes. Online multiplayer games were becoming more feasible for the average home user, and this paired with Quake’s quick rendering and fun multiplayer component, skyrocketed the game’s popularity."

Roboquest Devs Confirm The Game Won't Be Getting More Updates

In a fairly understandable move, RyseUp Studios, the developer of superb roguelike FPS, Roboquest, has called it quits after 'nearly a decade' of work, stating that there will be no more updates. In a post on Steam, the developers said that the game was never meant to be "a game as service". The game, which released into Early Access back in 2020 and has since been released on Xbox and PlayStation platforms, is much-loved by players, boasting an 'overwhelmingly positive' review rating on Steam.

RyseUp noted the absolute toll that working on one project for a near-decade took on its staff. "We know many of you would have loved to see more updates, more content, more Roboquest. But that isn't something we are able to deliver. Spending as much time on the same project takes a toll, and no matter how passionate we have been about Roboquest, it is finally time for us to look at new horizons."

The developer also noted that it is beginning work on an as-yet unknown project. It's pleasant to see developers recognising that they have the right to finish a game, while noting the human cost. It's something that big studios should take note of.

Killing Floor 3 To Launch In July

Killing Floor 3, which was originally set to launch in March, will release on July 24th for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X consoles. In a press release, developer Tripwire Interactive stated that "Since delaying the launch of Killing Floor 3, we’ve dedicated the additional development time to responding to the community’s feedback".

Notable changes have been made to the game's UI, artwork and design. It will be interesting to see whether Killing Floor 3 can replicate the success of the first two games in the series. Set nearly 70 years after Killing Floor 2, when the world is still apparently in a right state, it may well end up being a must-play co-op game.

Update Patch News Roundup (18/05/25)

Hello and welcome back to this week’s Update Patch, where we share the past week's biggest news stories from the world of games! It's been a wildly busy week for me, as I'll soon be moving house, but I've still been able to keep my finger on the pulse. Here's everything that you need to know about this week's big news.

With Liberty City And Justice for All

Amid the whirlwind of GTA VI news reports that have been fluttering across the startmenu news desk, we now need to flip those Roman numerals around, as a port of GTA IV for modern consoles may well be in the works. This report comes from a known Rockstar insider on gtaforums.com, Tez2. In a recent forum post, they wrote, regarding the port, "we may end up seeing it drop later this year", and that someone at Rockstar had "hinted" at the port. They also linked the development of this port to the takedown of the Liberty City Preservation Project, a mod that ported GTA IV's map into GTA V.

In the same forum post, Tez2 also said that a Max Payne 3 port may be coming, "If they still follow their plan laid out from the pandemic days". This move wouldn't be out of character – Red Dead Redemption finally hit PC last year, after the 2023 release of PS4 and Switch versions. Then there are, of course, the questionable Definitive Editions of III, Vice City, and San Andreas, which had a rocky release, to put it lightly.

Peace Comes To Mobile Devices As Activision Pulls Warzone Mobile

Just over a year after its March 2024 release, the cumbersomely-titled Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is to be pulled from app stores. The game will be pulled from the App Store and Google Play today, the 18th. Existing players will still be able to play the game "with continued cross-progression of shared inventories using existing content", according to Activision's statement on Twitter. Players will still be able to use CoD Points to buy content, but won't be able to buy any more points or Blackcell (the game's battlepass).

The game is being taken down due to it not meeting "expectations with mobile-first players like it has with PC and console audiences", according to the Activision support site. The long-running Call of Duty: Mobile will remain active. Playing competitive FPS games on mobile has always struck me as being quite an uncomfortable prospect, so it's not too big a surprise to see that the game hasn't made the impact that Activision hoped.

Fortnite Adds An AI-Voiced Darth Vader With Predictable Results

Epic has dabbled with generative AI and added an AI-powered Darth Vader to Fortnite because nothing is ever sacred anymore. The NPC, which can speak with players, was added on Friday and was immediately jailbroken, because AI models, if you've not been keeping up, are ridiculously easy to break out of their established behavioural guidelines. This, of course, went really well and provided merriment to all. No wait, capital “G” Gamers immediately made the digital James Earl Jones' zombie say slurs. You can see an example of Vader saying 'fucking' here, and one where he was tricked into, we think, providing British slang for cigarettes here

Epic reacted immediately, tweeting that it had pushed a hotfix, adding, "and this shouldn’t happen again".

The march of generative AI into the graves and gutters of humanity continues – what abomination do you think will be next? My money's on an AI version of someone who's still alive.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Remasters Coming Next Week

Get in here, stalker! Enhanced Editions of the iconic FPS's original trilogy are releasing next week, and I for one can't wait. The games have always been some of the most atmospheric titles around, and the enhanced editions look even better. These new versions are releasing on May 20th for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Stalker: Legends of the Zone Trilogy Enhanced Edition will be free to anyone who owns the original Legends of the Zone Trilogy on console, while PC players will get a free upgrade while still being able to play the originals.

The enhancements run the gamut from KBAM support and Mod.io integration on consoles, better lighting, upscaled textures and improved models for NPCs, weapons and more. On PC,  there will be Steam cloud save support, controller compatibility, and integration into the Steam Workshop. It's a great time to get back to the zone, especially if you're still waiting for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 to improve its AI.

Persona 5: The Phantom X To Release Next Month, Proving Dead Horses Can Be Beaten

Atlus continues to show that it is allergic to the number six, with yet another Persona 5 spinoff coming next month. This time, it's called Persona 5: The Phantom X. The game, developed by Chinese studio Black Wings Game Studio, alongside Atlus and Sega, has actually already had an open beta in China, so we know a fair bit about it already. It's a fairly standard mix of dungeoneering and social simulation, but in live-service form and in real time. Each type of activity will use energy that can be replenished by waiting or, well, paying for it.

The game will release next month on mobile and PC, on June 26th. Despite being the fourth, count 'em, spinoff of Persona 5, I'm slightly annoyed with myself that I'm still looking forward to this.

Update Patch News Roundup (25/05/25)

Welcome back to the Update Patch! It's time for us to have a look at the biggest news from the world of gaming this past week. This week we saw principled stands, the dumbest movie idea ever, and an update on whatever happened to the creepy digital boy that was Milo.

Brian Eno Takes a Stand for Palestine

In the continued wake of the fallout from BDS announcing Microsoft as a priority target in its ongoing boycott against Israel for its genocide in Palestine, Brian Eno, Roxy Music star and ambient legend, has taken a stand against Microsoft's ongoing support for Israel. The musician, who composed the Windows 95 startup sound, has written an open letter titled "Not in My Name", which he posted to Instagram.

In the letter, he said that he enjoyed working on the startup chime and "never would have believed that the same company could one day be implicated in the machinery of oppression and war". The letter follows an acknowledgement from Microsoft that it provides a range of services and products to the Israeli Ministry of Defence, without any oversight on what is being done with this software. The confirmation came to light in the same week as news that Microsoft is blocking emails from employees mentioning the keywords "Gaza" and "Palestine."

The letter highlighted the alleged "Where's Daddy?", a sickening name for software that can be used to track Palestinians and kill them in their homes. Eno used the letter to call for Microsoft to "suspend all services that support any operations that contribute to violations of international law". He has also pledged to donate the fee he received for creating the startup chime will be donated to helping the victims of the attacks in Gaza, concluding, "if a sound can signal a real change then let it be this one."

A Space Marine Remaster Is Coming Soon

The original Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is going to be getting a re-release with some light remastering work. The re-release, called Space Marine Master Crafted edition, will release on June 10th, featuring small improvements that would make the Emperor himself pleased. These include updated textures and models, remastered audio and 4K support. Apparently, there will also be modernised controls and a better UI, according to the trailer

Oh, and the orks now wear black leather armour, like they're straight out of Mad Max. This is to make sure that their "identity is fully aligned with the latest Warhammer 40,000 lore", according to Sneakybox producer Vaidas Mikelskas, via PCGamesN.

We don't know yet whether players who own the original game will get any sort of discount or even a free upgrade. If you want an ork-smashingly good time on a budget, you can pick up the original game's Anniversary Edition, which comes with all the DLC for cheap during sales.

Project Milo – Molyneux's Thoughts On The Ghost In The Kinect

Many of us have wondered, over the years, what happened to Milo, the digital Victorian ghost child that haunted the Kinect prior to launch, when it was still known as Project Natal. Okay, none of us have been wondering this and were probably quite pleased to be free of the little git, but still – Milo was being kind of hyped as an AI that you could have conversations with, foreshadowing the dark world that we live in today – and he disappeared without a trace.

An older Polygon piece laid out the broad details of what happened, but Peter Molyneux, one of gaming's enfants terrible, hadn't shared his deeper thoughts on Milo and the Kinect until now.

In an interview with Peter Molyneux in Gamesindustry.biz, he discussed how part of the problem with Milo was the Kinect's changing hardware specifications. The prototype models would have been exorbitant to buy, and the final product was reduced in cost "down to such a point, where the field-of-view...I think it was a minuscule field-of-view. In other words, it could only just see what's straight in front of you."

The final deathblow, according to Molyneux, was Microsoft changing the Kinect into a party-focused device, rather than one for gaming. Molyneux still regards the unreleased project as something special, despite it never being finished: "It was just experiencing what it's like to hang out with someone that loves you".

A Skibidi Toilet Film Is Coming And Michael Bay Is Making It

The world continues to make no sense whatsoever – a movie based on Skibidi Toilet, the Gen Alpha meme of choice, has entered production, with none other as its Great Helmsman than Michael Bay. How this is going to pair with Michael Bay's navel-gazing cinematographical sensibilities is really beyond me, but God knows that we live in a world where only bad ideas come to fruition.

The project has been floated for a while with Bay attached, but now it's officially in production and frankly, we deserve nothing more. We don't know when it'll be out, or when you'll need to take shelter from the inevitable version of Chicken Jockey 2.0, but we do know it's being produced by Invisible Narratives, an organisation which Bay serves with as Chief Creative Officer.

SAG-AFTRA Files Complaint Over AI Darth Vader

[I had trouble finding an image for this one, as we already used the main press one last week – if you'd be able to find one, that would be rad.]

SAG-AFTRA, a union of actors, voiceover artists and other media personalities, has filed a complaint against Epic after Fortnite began featuring an AI-voiced Darth Vader. An addition as part of the game’s Star Wars-themed season, which was immediately, as you might expect, tricked into saying slurs. Another huge problem with it, as with all gen AI, is the effect it has on those who would otherwise be working on such projects. The unfair labour practice complaint, filed against Epic subsidiary Llama Productions, alleges that the company "failed and refused to bargain in good faith with the union", which manifested by "utilizing AI-generated voices to replace bargaining unit work".

You can read the full complaint here. Ultimately, AI is always going to shaft over actors and talent, and one that, sadly, my government is actively aiding and abetting. All power to SAG-AFTRA.

Battlefield 6 Gun Classes Anger

In a move that has infuriated fans, the tentatively-titled Battlefield 6, the upcoming and by my count 17th game in the Battlefield franchise, will not restrict weapons to certain classes. This change came in Battlefield 2042, and left certain fans absolutely fuming. The new release will, however, give each class signature weapons which offer bonuses when used by a certain class, presumably an attempt to meet players in the middle while still allowing more player freedom.

I don't really have a dog in this fight, with the last Battlefield game that I loved being BF3, but judging from the series' subreddit, fans aren't happy. However, there may be hope for them yet – in the blog where this was revealed, gamers were encouraged to sign up for a testing system called Battlefield Labs "if you’re interested in helping us validate the future of Battlefield". Who knows what changes might be made if the fans are vociferous enough?

Update Patch News Roundup (01/06/25)

Hey all, welcome back to the startmenu Update Patch! We've got some hot stories from the last week of May in the world of gaming. We've got stories about a potential remake of a fan favourite, cancelled pre-orders, and big releases.

GAME Cancels Some Switch 2 Pre-Orders Prior To Launch Next Week

In what must be incredibly frustrating news, the British gaming chain GAME has cancelled Switch 2 pre-orders for some customers. The chain has yet to say why it has cancelled the pre-orders, but did put out a statement apologising for the turn of events and saying that customers should "Look out for an email titled 'You're Invited to Reorder Your Nintendo Switch 2'".

Considering the retailer's poor reputation for similar cancellations, why anyone would choose to reorder with GAME instead of any of the other online retailers where the console is coming in and out of stock is beyond me, but there you go. If you're particularly keen on grabbing a Switch 2, and fancy a retro experience, you can even try and attend a midnight launch party, which a few retailers are holding.

The news is particularly crushing as the Switch 2 releases in less than a week's time on the 5th of June. The hotly anticipated console will release with Mario Kart World, Cyberpunk 2077 and a brand-stonking new version of Yakuza 0

Elden Ring: Nightreign Launches To Mixed Reactions But Tons Of Players

In a month that saw most large games scatter to avoid the leviathan that was Doom: The Dark Ages, Elden Ring: Nightreign was not deterred. Launching this past week, Nightreign is a standalone and co-op spinoff of Elden Ring, and has, as you might expect from a new Fromsoft game, hit massive player numbers already. According to the Elden Ring Twitter account, two million players had loaded the game up within its first 24 hours. At the time of writing, there are 299,000 people playing it on Steam alone.

However, all has not been rosy in the world of Limveld. Well, I suppose a lot of things aren't rosy, but this one is more troubling than most: the game has got mixed reviews on Steam. It's not entirely unreasonable either – the game can technically be played singleplayer, but it's not recommended, at least not now, as the game's balance is on the brutal side even for a Fromsoft game. There isn't a duos mode, either – the game is balanced for trios, and if you only have one other person to play with, or can't rope anyone else into a masochistic gaming session, then it might not be for you.

This isn't the only problem, either – there have been some performance issues on PC, particularly on those using the latest graphics cards. If you're on the fence, it may be best to sit this one out until developers have fixed this issue.

An "Official" Russian Military Game Has Somehow Made it Onto Steam

In quite plainly weird news, a game that claims to be officially recommended by the Russian military has been released on Steam. Squad 22: ZOV, claims to be "officially recommended by the Russian Military for use as a basic infantry tactic manual for cadet and Yunarmy [the Young Army Cadets National Movement] training". It should also be noted that Z, O and V are all symbols used by the Russian military during the invasion of Ukraine.

As you might expect, this has not been warmly received.

Speaking to PC Gamer, the developer claimed that the game had gone through a long moderation process with Valve prior to releasing on the store. How it made it through this moderation process, if it did, when it sanitises the invasion of Ukraine and its countless massacres, or as the game's store page euphemistically calls them "the 2014 and 2022-2024 events", is a seriously horrifying question.

With any luck, this game will be delisted shortly. If not, it opens up the risk of gameswashing becoming more common, and that's not something anyone wants in a world that's already awash with propaganda.

Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Officially Enters Pre-Production

Cyberpunk 2077's sequel has officially entered pre-production, shedding its codename of Project Orion for the much more dynamic, er, Cyberpunk 2. The sequel was announced way back in the hinterlands of 2022, but it's now being worked on according to the studio's Q1 earnings press release.

The team working on Cyberpunk 2 now numbers at just under 100, according to Eurogamer, up from 84 in February. CD Projekt Red must be extremely busy right now, with The Witcher IV also in development, along with a Witcher spinoff called Project Sirius and an original title called Project Hadar.

Persona 4 Remake On The Cards?

A particularly tantalising rumour for those who love the franchise, a Persona 4 remake may be coming. Several of the original game's voice actors have said that they won't be returning for the as-yet-unannounced remake, specifically those of Yosuke Hanamura (Yuri Lowenthal), Chie Satonaka (Erin Fitzgerald), and Yukiko Amagi (Amanda Winn Lee). The remake rumour is backed up by these claims as well as the fact that the domain p4re.jp has been registered, mirroring the website p3re.jp which is the official website of Persona 3 Reload

If we are to get a remake of Persona 4, I'll be happy, but cautiously so. While I love Persona 4 (mostly thanks to Giant Bomb and its Endurance Run, which I still quote to this day), I do have a bone to pick with the idea of remaking games that are still perfectly playable. What are the odds that we get a remake of Persona 5 before Persona 6 finally releases?
