Classic World of Warcraft Beta Opens Today

I wonder if players will go rogue…

If you’re a fan of World of Warcraft then you might have heard the Classic version of WOW was getting a polish and re-release. It’s 15 years since the Classic version of the MMORPG was originally released so it’s no wonder that it’s a world away from its current format with multiple expansions, lore and adjustments. Fans, for a long time, have been asking to get back to basics and yesterday Blizzard announced a release date: 27th August.

That’s not all they announced however, as today marks the day that players will get a chance to experience the open beta. However, this opportunity is only open to those that have already acquired a World of Warcraft subscription, but at least the beta will be experienced by the fan who continue to the love that universe over a decade later.

Fan response has mostly been, as it should be with MMORPGs, about how many hours they want to lose into the Classic edition of the game, and who could blame them. It’s this version that really catapulted World of Warcraft into being one of the biggest MMOs out there with a player base Blizzard may never be able to cultivate again, or at least not one that will have the natural longevity of WOW.

Classic is a game already released and received well, so it’s now a matter of seeing if the player base think its younger brother is a more complete experience or its charm and nuance has held up well.
